These pictures show the complete process of injecting Airkrete foam insulation into existing walls. This home had insulation in only one of the exterior walls. The exterior finish was stucco with texture.


Step 1: Cutting the Holes

Each wall cavity must be drilled in order to fill it with foam insulation. In older construction there will often be a fire block in each stud cavity. This means a hole must be created above and below the fire block. We use a combination of round holes cut with a stucco bit, a grinder with stucco blade, or a 3/4 inch masonry drill bit. Small cavities are drilled with the masonry bit.

Holes are cut into stucco to fill with foam insulation. We use a grinder or stucco hole saw.


Step 3: Injecting Airkrete Wall Foam

Each cavity is filled with foam insulation. We insert a fill tube all the way to the end of the cavity to ensure a complete fill. The tube is removed as the foam is injected into the wall. Wall cavities are filled from the bottom up and from the top down. The foam material "sets" within a few seconds of coming out the nozzle and does not flow out of the wall.

Step 2: Wall Preparation

Preparation is simple--make sure the fill hose can reach the top and bottom of each wall cavity. We probe each cavity to ensure fire blocks or other framing does not block it. If there is existing fiberglass insulation in the wall we will remove some of it to make sure the fill hose can reach the top and bottom of each cavity.

When existing insulation is present in the wall, we some out to ensure the fill hose can easily reach the top and bottom of the cavity.


Step 4: Finished Product

Can you see where the walls were drilled, filled and patched? This project was more than 260 holes cut into the exterior wall.

This wall has more than 40 holes cut and filled with foam. The patch job came out perfect.

Spray Foam for Medical Marijuana Cultivation

Closed cell spray foam insulation was used to insulate the overhead ceiling of a medical marijuana cultivation facility. The project was located in the general Los Angeles area.

Inland Empire Utilities Authority Water Quality Lab

This new construction project called for 2 inches of closed cell spray foam to be applied to the interior surface of GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) Panels on the exterior of the building. Project was classified as Public Works and was prevailing wage

Wine Storage Facility

A small fast-growing winery constructed a new brewing and storage facility. The building is metal construction and insulated with closed cell spray foam insulation.

Intumescent coating was applied to the foam above 7 ft on the walls and the overhead roof. After foam installation, the owner installed steel panels to cover the foam at the ground floor level.

Indoor Swimming Pool Moisture Barrier

Aqua Tots provides swimming lessons to small children and builds very nice indoor swimming pool facilities. Their new location in Orange, CA required an impermeable moisture and air-barrier for the indoor pool area.

This project used StayCell 265 closed cell spray foam that incorporates the intumescent coating in the spray foam itself.

Controlling Heat from a Mechanical Room

A hi-rise apartment building was having trouble with the heat from its mechanical room. The room where the air conditioning units are located reaches temperatures up to 150 degrees, and would "bake" the apartment units above. Four inches of closed cell spray foam was used to insulate the ceiling of this mechanical room and protect the units above. The customer also added a ventilation system to exhaust the heat out of the mechanical room so the air conditioning units would be more efficient.

Insulate Club House at RV park in Needles, Arizona

Inherent in the ambiance of a modern barn is unfinished simplicity, understated but clean. Most importantly, a cool place for a dance when the outside is 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This is achieved with 15.5 inches of open cell polyurethane spray foam (R60 to overhead ceiling that is approximately 5,040 sq ft and 8 inches (R30) to the walls. Foam was left exposed with it's natural varigated surface but covered with a 15 minute "Thermal Barrier” coating for the fire-safety code.

Home remodel in Hancock Park of Los Angeles

This project insulates the home from heat entering through walls and roof by a complete spray foam application to the entire building envelope with closed cell polyurethane foam.

* The Work Area is the exterior walls and overhead ceiling/roofline of the subject property.
* The Work Area also includes the converted garage--to be installed at a later date.

We taped and draped custom front room window, and sprayed foam under roof of the vaulted ceiling, and sprayed foam on the exterior walls.

A bedroom insulated with foam. Heat normally radiates into attic and is slowed only by a layer of fiber-glass on the floor of the attic. Here the heat is kept out of attic by the foam sprayed on the roof line. Now The air conditioning ducts running inside the attic will stay cool. We have seen typical California attics insulated by fiberglass reach 150 degrees F.
